CONTROL THE ENVIRONMENT

The hardwoods used to build your cabinets are a natural substance. The wood will breathe, expanding and contracting with temperature and humidity changes, even after protective finishes have been applied. The environment where new cabinets are installed needs to be controlled.
EFFECTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT
If the humidity moves out of the ideal range, solid wood may expand or contract, perhaps causing a slight gap at joints or between fitted pieces. Uncontrolled humidity conditions can also cause splits or cracks in the grain pattern and joints of the wood panels. These symptoms are not considered to be defects. If the environment is not controlled, these conditions should be appreciated as an inherent characteristic of solid wood.

Your cabinets will respond to changes in temperature and humidity by expanding and contracting. Keep the indoor humidity in the 35 to 45 percent range to minimize these effects.

UV rays, both from the sun and fluorescent lights, may cause changes in the wood and/or finish.

Keep cabinets away from direct sources of heating and cooling.

Avoid storing or installing cabinets in an unheated or uninsulated attic, basement, or garage.
